I’ve cobbled together enough sites to know what makes things harder and what doesn’t. I sit down after every round of wireframes and aesthetics, before they get shown to a client, and point out everything I think will make something harder, and they do likewise. We don’t show anything until everyone is comfortable with it.
My analogy has always been that the good interactive designer needs to know as much about code as the good print designer knows about printing: you don’t actually need to know how to run the press, but you need a solid knowledge base about what is going to work and what isn’t, what will make things difficult and time consuming and what won’t.
